Embracing Gratitude: Trusting God Through Life's Challenges this Thanksgiving

In the midst of life's challenges, finding peace can feel impossible. Yet, the message in Philippians 4:6 offers a powerful reminder: even in hard times, we can pause, pray, and give thanks for what God has done in our lives. This month of Thanksgiving invites us to reflect on gratitude, not just for the good moments but also through the trials. Let's talk about how trusting God during difficult seasons can bring peace and encouragement.

Understanding Philippians 4:6 in Context

Philippians 4:6 says, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." This verse encourages us to replace anxiety with prayer and gratitude. It doesn't promise a life free from trouble but offers a way to face those troubles with a calm heart. Looking closer when the Apostle Paul wrote these words to the church in Philippi, not only was he under house arrest but he was writing to address troubles happening within the church and conflicts within the people. I've experienced times in life where the troubles seem to be utterly crushing and I just don't seem to have the strength to work through it all. I love the history of Paul's writing and the fact that he was in a situation that could've been very anxious driven, but... he looks UP instead of into the muck. His encouragement not only resonated with the Philippians then, but resonates over two thousand years later to us today. Isn't the Bible so good?! Here are a few things to remember in the midst of it all...

  • Anxiety is natural but not final. Life’s difficulties often bring worry, but this verse calls us to a different response.

  • Prayer is a powerful tool. Bringing concerns to God invites His peace into our hearts.

  • Thanksgiving shifts perspective. Recognizing God’s past faithfulness helps us trust Him for the future.

This approach is especially meaningful during Thanksgiving, a time when many reflect on blessings despite hardships.

Why Giving Thanks Matters in Hard Times

Gratitude might seem out of place when life feels overwhelming. Yet, giving thanks during trials can:

  • Change our focus. Instead of dwelling on problems, we remember God’s goodness.

  • Strengthen faith. Recalling past answers to prayer builds trust in God’s ongoing care.

  • Bring peace. Gratitude calms the mind and heart, reducing anxiety.

This past weekend at the IF Table for November, a friend shared how her husband being out of work for a long stretch of time allowed her to better thank God for the provisions He gave her and their family every day. It's easy to look at the despair that the "problem" may provide, but when we remember that God is with us in the trial, when we thank Him for not only what He has done, is doing and will do, it allows us to live with a heart of gratitude. Her husband had just started a new job that was an answer to prayer, but in the wait, God was able to reveal His goodness in ways they would not have experienced otherwise.

Practical Ways to Practice Thanksgiving in Trials

Here are some practical steps to help you embrace thanksgiving even when life is tough:

  • Keep a gratitude journal. Write down daily things you are thankful for, including small moments of joy or comfort. I personally like to write 3-5 things from the past 24 hours... a conversation with a friend, something unexpected, etc.

  • Pray with thanksgiving. When you bring your requests to God, include thanks for His presence and past help. Trust that He IS working, even when we don't see it and thank Him for what He is doing now.

  • Share your gratitude. Tell others about what you are thankful for; this can encourage both you and them. You all know that I've become a fairly open book to others and it can breed others to consider what they are thankful for as well.

  • Reflect on Scripture. Meditate on verses like Philippians 4:6 to remind yourself of God’s promises. There are so many amazing verses in the Bible that remind us to give thanks. If you have the YouVersion Bible App, you can even do short devotionals or plans on the topic. So encouraging.

  • Serve others. Helping those in need can shift your focus from problems to purpose. Being His hands and feet is a way that I've found helps grow my own gratitude.

These actions help cultivate a heart of gratitude that sustains peace, especially in times that are tough.

Trusting God When Answers Don’t Come Quickly

Sometimes, prayers seem unanswered, and trials linger. Trusting God in these moments requires patience and faith.

  • Remember God’s timing is perfect. What feels like delay may be preparation or protection. This has been something that I've had to learn over the years. It's not easy but I have come to ONLY want His timing and not mine.

  • God understands your pain. You are not alone in your struggles. This cannot be stated enough. Not only is He with you in your darkest moments, Jesus experienced pain first hand on so many levels. He KNOWS the feelings you're experiencing and is holding you in His mighty right hand.

  • Faith grows through waiting. Trust deepens when we rely on God despite uncertainty. Again, this is easier said than done. My personal faith has grown immensely in seasons of wait. Trusting God with it all, knowing He is perfect and is working everything out, truly allows peace that transcends understanding.

A story from the Bible illustrates this well: Job endured great suffering but continued to trust God. His story encourages us to hold on to faith, knowing God’s love never fails. I encourage you to dive into the book of Job and reflect on his example during trials.

Encouragement for Those Facing Trials Today

If you are going through a difficult season, here are some words of encouragement:

  • You are not forgotten. God sees your pain and cares deeply.

  • Peace is available. Through prayer and thanksgiving, you can experience calm even in chaos.

  • Growth is possible. Trials can develop strength, character, and hope. While I hate to admit it, my greatest growth in life has come directly out of trials I have encountered. I look back and can remember that in those times, I've become the woman I am today and am incredibly grateful for that.

  • Community matters. Reach out to others for support and encouragement. This cannot be stated enough! Even ONE person (if you can't think of someone, you have ME)... when you're down and don't have the words to say it, just ask for prayer, even without stating the need. Being vulnerable, especially with other believers, is how we build one another up in Christ. It's a blessing to pray over each other.

Remember, Thanksgiving is not just a day but a way of living that can transform your experience of hardship.

Embracing Thanksgiving as a Lifestyle

Thanksgiving is more than a holiday tradition; it is a daily choice. When we make gratitude a habit, we build resilience against life’s storms.

  • Start each day by naming one thing you are thankful for.

  • End each day by reflecting on God’s faithfulness.

  • Use challenges as opportunities to deepen your trust in God.

These things lead to lasting peace and joy, no matter the circumstances. I hope that you've found some encouragement today, in spite of the hardship you may be experiencing.
